April Work Party

Pretty good turnout for the April 2009 work party. Barb kept us organized and focused on the tasks at hand... and didn't have to use the machete even once!

The vertical garden special project has begun. Hopefully our Cottonwood 'stump' will be transformed into a magical 'Hobbit Tree' complete with a collection of bird houses on the top floor. If anyone has groovy birdhouses to donate, please leave them on the cherry wood rounds by the flagstone garden. If anyone has hens and chicks they can donate for the Hobbit Tree - let Deirdre know - or leave them on the rounds.

Pray for the sun to make a permanent appearance so we can plant beans and tomatoes!! This weather is certainly ideal for peas - but enough already.

Spring is almost sprung - which meant our annual delivery of compost to enrich our soil for the upcoming growing season. Compost delivery always ensures a good turnout of our garden members - over 33 peeps today!

The members pitched in and did a good cleanup of the garden while waiting for the compost to arrive.

You want me to do what?!


What's especially special about this year's compost is that it's clean as a whistle... well as close to clean as possible for manure tee hee. Kudos to Barb for schmoozing Thomas Reid farm guy to give us a community garden price that fit within our budget and organizing the delivery.

The compost originates from organic chickens and it's absolutely scrumptious - no nasty chemi smells - just earthy, black, crumbly and no c**p in it! I could almost hear my arugula sighing with joy. My Salt Spring seeds this year will have a worthy platform in which to grow - now let's pray for more sun - not snow!!

Fall Work Party - a small but dedicated crew

The October 4th work party was very successful, despite the dismal lack of attendance - 13 members out of the 46 total membership attended.

We had a lovely morning chopping up the big pile of plant material at the back of the garden to feed to the compost... bundling up refuse for the city to collect... cleaning and oiling the common tools... and of course the perennial weeding... all the while, a gentle fall breeze keeping us company.



Four things to do before Sunday evening:

1. Check out the David Hunter 55th anniversary sale - I got a wicked pair of Felco #2's for 50% off. What a deal.

2. Go back and admire the absence of the green pile at the back of the garden :)

3. Plant more bulbs. Thx to whoever left the 'Deirdre' tulip bulbs in gardenflower's garden. I always wanted a flower named after me!

4. Divide and transplant... plant garlic.
